The House Manual in the house has suggestions for places across the island. Below are a few within 20 minutes’ of the house.

SANTANYI

Bar Sa Placa provides good simple snacks.

Sa Gripia – on the Calle Obispo Verger 26 (971 65 38 52). It is most attractive set in the courtyard of an old town house. Not sure how good the food is. It is also an art gallery.

Es Moli - an old mill –on the Alqueria Blanca road has new owners and is recommended but none of us have been recently.  You can eat in the enclosed garden and it used to be very child friendly.

Hotel Santanyi
This is a new hotel (opened 2008) run by Germans. The restaurant looks promising and it has a quiet patio for summer dining. We have not tried it yet.

ALQUERIA BLANCA

Es Clos, on the main road between Santanyi and Alqueria Blanca on the southern side, has an international menu both innovative and expensive – also upmarket. The German owner has created an attractive atmosphere and one can eat on the terrace or indoors.

Sa Plaça in the main square serves interesting tapas. These can be ordered either as an appetizer or a main course. You can share dishes which mean that you can try a number of things.

La Residencia is situated on the left side of a wide palm-lined avenue called ‘ambulatoria’ descending from the village. The restaurant is spartan but squeaky clean with an enormous terrace (good for children) with a magnificent sea view.  Food is simple but beautifully cooked and very authentic. The black squid rice (for two) is delicious but it has to be ordered in advance. It is closed on Thursdays. Very good value and authentic local cooking.

Bacco is an Italian restaurant on the south side of the village. The food is excellent and there is a pleasant outdoor area in which to dine. Quite pricey and service can be variable.

Restaurante el Campo  (tel –  971 16 42 65) is on the right hand side on the road to Porto Petro.  Pleasant country location with lovely new terrace overlooking fields. Excellent food cooked by a local family team. Try the pimentones de padron (small fried green peppers that you can share before your starters – some can be very hot so nibble each one before eating!) and the tumbet (lighly fried potatoes with a kind of ratatouille mix on the top) which you can order in place of the usual vegetables. The restaurant specializes in grilled meat and fish.

CALONGE

bona taula is an attractive and highly recommended restaurant in a traditional Mallorcan house near the church. It specializes in Mallorcan food and has a large fireplace with meat being grilled over hot charcoal all evening. In summer it is essential to book a table in the garden as it’s too hot inside and even more important to book a few days before for a large party. Try the stuffed squid (you can share it as a starter) and the pimentones al padron.  If you like vegetables and salad be very specific when you order as most dishes just come with chips or baked potatoes. Bookings can be made in English 971 65 82 02  or 97 16 7 147 but the telephone is often not answered until 6.00 p.m. It does not serve lunch and may be closed on Tuesday evenings.

near ES CARRITXO

Sa Farinera is a  farmhouse that has been converted to a large restaurant preparing local dishes and grilled meats.  It is one of the few restaurants still in Mallorcan hands and has an especially cool summer terrace. In winter it is closed on Tuesday.  It is important to book in the summer 971 83 72 28.

CA’S CONCOS

between Ca’s Concos and Santanyi
For a special occasion the Sa Galera rural hotel is a must. A large estate has been converted into an hotel – prettily landscaped and very quiet. The restaurant is called S’Espigo.  You have a choice of a beautiful garden terrace or the stylish restaurant. It specializes in good Spanish cooking As you drive from the south it is on the right hand side at Km6.3.  Tel – 971 84 20 79.

Outside Ca’s Concos on the Felanitx road is an attractive restaurant called Son Terrassa which is locally owned. The view over the farmlands to the west is spectacular and the food local and good but it can be heavy. A good place for children as there is plenty of space. It is closed on Wednesdays. Tel – 971 84 20 80. It is also a rural hotel.

CALA MONDRAGO

Font de Nalis – is a good lunchtime restaurant right on the beach. It also serves meals up until 8.00 to 9.00 p.m.  It is an excellent venue for children as they can run around and have fun on the beach. The staff are variable but it’s still a lovely place to eat.

Azul restaurante  is run by Tony and Yvette. It is near Cala Mondrago on the Cal Borgit side. Recommended – closed Mondays.

PORTO PETRO

La Caracola  bar and cafeteria, Avenida del Puerto 40. Tel – 971 65 70 13 for excellent local food at sensible prices. Set menu at lunch only but á la carte menu in the evenings. The restaurant is split in two by a road and if you eat on the terrace in the summer overlooking the small port the waiters have to nip back and forth dodging the traffic! Very unsmart but full of local clientele. Excellent fish dishes, try pulpo a la gallegaas a starter (octopus with paprika) and for dessert crema Catalana. Another delicious dish is calamarines – small deep fried squid. The house wine is good and served in a carafe. Not recommended for very young children as too near the road. Porto Petro also has a few other restaurants on the port which look good.

SES SALINES

Next to the church isthe tiny tapas restaurant Casa Manolo. It gets very busy in the summer so arrive early or book in advance. It is one of Juan Carolos’s favourite places. Everything is highly recommended, especially the calamar potera. Tel –  971 271 016.
